Case Circumstances
L.G. Shaw was a well-known 76-year-old Benton County, MS resident who had owned a trucking company. After his retirement, he stayed active, making his rounds to check on his family and his cattle and horses daily until he went missing on July 15th, 2009.
Mr. Shaws granddaughter D'Aunna describes her grandpa as a creature of habit. She said he always wore khaki pants and plaid shirts with a front pocket where he carried his cell phone and cigarettes everywhere he went. He made rounds every morning and again every evening to check on his loved ones as they all lived within a 3-mile radius of each other.

The day Mr. Shaw went missing started just like any other, he went to feed his livestock and then stopped by D'Aunna's house, he was wearing his plaid top with the cigarettes and his cell phone in the pocket with his khaki pants. Before he left he mentioned that he was looking for a Colt he thought may have gotten hung up in a tree since he didn't see him when he went to feed.

D'Aunna knew something was seriously wrong later that day when he didn't return for dinner and didn't answer her calls. She immediately went to Mr. Shaw's home to check on him, but he wasn't there. Her panic increased when she found his cell phone and cigarettes on the nightstand, she knew he wouldn't have gone anywhere without them. The only thing found missing other than Mr. Shaw was the two wallets he carried on him, one of which always contained a large sum of money.
His truck was found parked at the entrance of his pasture.

Law Enforcement was called, but since his home was in Benton County, MS, and his pasture crossed into Hardeman County TN, it led to confusion on who would handle the investigation. The "case" was ultimately decided to belong to Benton County, MS, as his home was there. However, the only search was conducted by family members, volunteers, and Tennessee Rescue they searched by foot, horseback, and ATVs for 7 days before calling it quits.
The Benton County Sheriff's Department "investigators" never listed him as missing, did not investigate Mr. Shaw's phone records beyond the call log on his phone, and his bank account was not looked at. His family still wants to get the missing person report required to list him on sites dedicated to locating and identifying the missing. Something that should have been done by the agency in charge back in 2009.

Mr. Shaw's family did hire a private investigator, and a tip came in saying that Mr. Shaw had been seen with a local, unfortunately, the informant passed away from natural causes before anything could become of the information.

D'Aunna said that the family knows they are looking for skeletal remains, as they know Mr. Shaw would not have left them on purpose. The family is prepared they just want to give him the dignity of a proper burial and have the peace of knowing they were able to honor him that way.
